Heaven Helps Those Who Help Themselves
Tom Ellis, (pseudonym for Tom Glover), New Zealand Free Lance, 19 October 1921
Reference no: J-044-003

After the First World War, the commandeering of food continued for several years. But when it ended for meat and wool in mid-1920 and for butter and cheese a year later, primary produce demand slackened and high-flying prices plummetted. Prime Minister Massey's response to the depression was retrenchment.

Tom Glover (1891-1938) was Truth cartoonist from 1911-1921 and during part of the period 'moonlighted' at the Free Lance as Tom Ellis - his Christian names. He became the Sydney Sun's cartoonist in the early 1930s and died on the job in 1938.
