New Zealand Prime Minister Sid Holland used the 1951 waterfront emergency to increase his majority at that year's election. His tough, unequivocating stand was widely applauded, while Walter Nash's 'fence-sitting' damaged Labour's credibility.

Keith Waite was appointed staff cartoonist at the Otago Daily Times in 1949. Two years later he left for Britain and a distinguished career that included stints on the Daily Sketch, Sun, Daily Mirror and The Times.
