Sir George Reid, New South Wales premier from 1897-99 and Australian
prime minister in 1904-05, visited New Zealand in 1900. He, like
other Australian politicians, was impressed with the relative prosperity
and apprehensive about the Liberals' radical legislative programme.
William Blomfield (1866-1938) began as cartoonist on the
Observer in 1887, became part-owner in 1892 and was still working
at the weekly until a few days before his death in 1938.
