By 1984 New Zealand Prime Minister Muldoon completely dominated his National government. It was both his unilateral decision to call an early election and his unwillingness to face economic reality that led to a crushing defeat that year.

Malcolm Walker, an Auckland-based architect, has been the Sunday News's editorial cartoonist for a number of years.
