Murray Ball's 'Footrot Flats' cartoon strip characters, led by Wal and Dog, became iconic figures in New Zealand and were highly popular in Australia as well.

Murray Ball was a successful strip cartoonist in Britain and New Zealand before he began drawing 'Footrot Flats in 1975. He retired Wal and Dog 25 years later, but re-runs continue.
