Beginning with his hometown paper, the Bay of Plenty Times in Tauranga, and with two stints on the New Zealand Herald from 1970 till 1978 (succeeding Sir Gordon Minhinnick), and from 1997 till 2003, Malcolm Evans has been a cartoonist for most of his working life. Twice Qantas Media Awards Cartoonist-of-the-Year and many times a finalist, Evans currently produces daily editorial cartoons for The Press, Christchurch, The Timaru Herald and the Manawatu Standard. He also produces fortnightly cartoons of his popular farming character Edna for Rural News. He has published 12 Edna books and three collections of editorial cartoons. He edited and published the New Zealand Political Cartoon Annual in 2012. It appeared again in 2013.
