Tremain worked in farming and advertising before extensive travel. In 1971 he settled in the Queenstown area where he established himself as a successful landscape painter. He has been a political cartoonist since 1988 and for over 20 years his work appeared daily in several New Zealand newspapers. He has produced 16 books of collected cartoons and has published a book of his drawings and paintings of Arrowtown, and a humorous book about his struggles with golf. His cartoons still appear regularly in the Otago Daily Times .
